The assistant seamstress/tailor plays a key role in the coordination and supervision of a fashion house’s assembly workshop. The assistant’s main role is to assist the head seamstress/tailor in the daily production management by ensuring that tasks are carried out in an efficient manner and by respecting quality standards.
Job description
The assistant’s tasks are varied and stimulating. Working in close collaboration with the head seamstress/tailor to plan work schedules, delegate tasks to dressmakers, tailors, and fit technicians and to assure the coordination and production flow. The assistant manages the resources, the division of labor and the supervision of all phases of the production process.
The assistant works in close collaboration with the other company departments, like the innovation and design unit, purchasing, and logistics to guarantee fluid communication and optimal coordination in all phases of the production process. The assistant plays a key role in the delivery deadline follow-up, in resolving technical problems and the optimization of the production process.
The assistant’s missions go way beyond production coordination. They are also responsible for the training and upskilling of the production team. They supervise dressmakers, tailors, and fit technicians by guiding them in task execution and support them along their career paths. They ensure the safety and hygiene of the work environment, while stimulating and motivating team members.
The assistant must be a multitasking and skilled leader. They must possess highly advanced sewing technique know-how, knowledge of quality standards and production procedures. Clear and efficient communication as well as the capacity to resolve problems rapidly are the essential skills to succeed in this role.
With greater experience and highly developed skills in production management, an assistant can move up to head tailor/seamstress positions, production manager or can equally choose to specialize in a specific domain like quality control or production schedule management.
